UNN International Council meets in the capital of Europe
On September 28-29, a meeting of the International Council of Lobachevsky University took place at the Maastricht University Campus Brussels (Belgium). The Council includes representatives of leading universities, scientific, educational and expert organizations from seven countries of the world whose professional activities are related to the UNN. The meeting was held under the chairmanship of the Council Co-Chairs: the President of the Maastricht University, Professor Martin Paul, and the Rector of Lobachevsky University, Professor Evgeny Chuprunov. At the invitation of the University, the Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary Ambassador of the Russian Federation to the Kingdom of Belgium Alexander Tokovinin took part in the event.
The keynote address on the achievements and development prospects of Lobachevsky University from the point of view of improving its international competitiveness was given by Alexander Bedny, UNN Vice-Rector for International Affairs. In his speech, he highlighted the participation of the University in the "5-100" Project. Viktor Kazantsev, Vice-Rector for Research, spoke about Lobachevsky University’s results in the field of research and technology development. The reports were followed by an extensive and informative discussion. In the course of it, the Council members noted the University’s significant achievements in enhancing its international competitiveness and developing internationalization, and made some suggestions on issues related to the further promotion of Lobachevsky University in the international market of education, research and innovation. These proposals will be used in the UNN’s work to implement the "5-100" Project. They will be also taken into account when designing the development strategy of the University until 2030.
Also during the meeting, Waldemar Siwinski, Vice President of the IREG Observatory on Academic Ranking and Excellence, a member of the Council, presented a certificate confirming the admission of Lobachevsky University to this organization to UNN Rector Evgeny Chuprunov. It is worth noting that on the list of IREG members are the leading ranking agencies, educational organizations and universities. Russian universities in this organization are represented by Moscow State University, St. Petersburg State University, MEPhI, MGIMO, and some other reputable institutions of higher learning.
In the second part of the Council’s session, the President of the University of Maastricht, Professor Martin Paul and his colleagues spoke about the secrets of their university’s success. Despite its young age, the university was able to demonstrate impressive development dynamics, which ensured, among other things, its success in international rankings. Kamila Partyka, a Policy Officer of the Innovation in Education Department of the European Commission Directorate-General for Education and Culture, also took part in the event. She presented an overview of international educational and scientific cooperation programs implemented by the European Commission, in which Russian universities can take part (Erasmus +, Horizon-2020 and some others).
