The Institute of Economics of UNN is designed to provide a qualitatively new level of development of education and research in the field of economics, finance, management and entrepreneurship at Lobachevsky University.
In 2024, the Institute of Economics was renamed the Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship. The Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship was created in 2014 by merging three specialized faculties of the university - the Faculty of Economics, the Faculty of Finance and the Faculty of Management and Entrepreneurship. This decision became part of the general program to improve the competitiveness of Lobachevsky University in order to optimize the structure and sustainability of the development of progressive scientific and educational activities in the field of social and economic sciences.
The Institute of Economics concentrates in itself all the rich experience accumulated by its faculty over many years, and in this sacredly honors the already established traditions. The training of personnel at Lobachevsky University in the field of economics began on September 1, 1959, teaching in the field of finance has been successfully carried out for more than 15 years. The Faculty of Management and Entrepreneurship, opened in 1994, was the first faculty of this type in the country and was noted by the Prime Minister of Nizhny Novgorod for training in-demand personnel in the context of socio-economic reforms.
As the main structural division of universities in terms of the number of students and teachers, the Institute of Economics trains bachelors, specialists and masters in more than 20 areas. The Institute has postgraduate and doctoral programs. The very fact of the creation of the Institute is a reason for a qualitatively new, modern level of scientific planning, developed taking into account Russian and international experience in the field of management, economics, finance and entrepreneurship. To ensure the quality of education, new educational technologies are used here that meet the best international standards. Modern project-oriented methods, e-learning courses, various forms of distance learning, advanced training courses are actively introduced, trainings are conducted, seminars with remote employers are organized. The Institute cares about its image, the most important of which is the level of training and competitiveness in the labor market of its graduates.
The Institute of Economics staff members are actively involved in research, participate as leaders in international and Russian scientific conferences, publish monographs and articles in leading scientific journals. The Institute includes the Center for Macro and Microeconomics, which carries out intensive scientific and project activities.
International cooperation is one of the most important activities of the Institute of Economics. The Institute has stable ties with universities in the near and far abroad (Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, China, etc.). The Institute actively participates in the implementation of various international projects and programs, implements opportunities for international mobility of students and faculty, and also provides an opportunity to gain access to information resources, improve the effectiveness of scientific research and the efficiency of training. The activities of the Institute of Economics provide a significant contribution to the recognition of Lobachevsky University as one of the leading Russian scientific and educational centers.

Multi-disciplinary curriculum is delivered by highly qualifies professors and associate professors and prepares students for the economic and financial challenges. Institutes of economics provides two educational programmes in English.
- Bachelor’s degree programme in Economics (profile World Economy).
- Master’s degree programme in Management (Management of Business and Finance).
RUSSIAN–TAUGHT PROGRAMMES
The Institute provides different types and forms of educational programmes in Russian: Bachelor’s degree programmes, Master’s programmes, Specialist programmes. The duration of every Bachelor’s degree programme is four years. The duration of every Master’s degree programme is two years. The duration of each Specialist programme is five years.
