On February 23, international students of Lobachevsky University enrolled on programs taught in English visited the exhibition "Wide Shrovetide", which was held from February 19 to 26 at the Nizhni Novgorod Trade Fair. In the course of a tour organized specially for students from Mexico, Italy, Afghanistan, Turkmenistan, Peru, Bali, India and Morocco, they learned about the Orthodox exhibition-fair and about its main relic, the miracle-working icon of Our Lady of Kazan from the village Rozhnovo in the Nizhni Novgorod region. It was also explained to the students why and how the exhibition is related to the traditional festival of Shrovetide. Of particular interest to students was the interactive carnival program prepared by the historical reconstruction club, including picturesque fights of Russian knights dressed in chain mail. They have also enjoyed traditional Shrovetide treats, hot "smoky" pancakes prepared in the mobile refectory of the Ababkovo St. Nicholas and St. George convent. This event has offered international students of UNN an excellent opportunity to learn more about the rich world of Russian culture and traditions.
