On February 17, Lobachevsky University welcomed a delegation from the Japanese Embassy to explore further collaboration with universities and research centres in Japan.

The Minister Counselor and Head of the Information department of the Japanese Embassy in Russia, Mr. Kotaro Otsuki, along with the embassy secretary, Ms. Anna Proshina and Director of Japan Center in Nizhny Novgorod, Akihiko Satake met with UNN Rector, Prof. Evgeny Chuprunov, UNN Vice-Rector for International Affairs, Alexander Bedny, and UNN International Office Director, Ilya Kuftyrev to discuss opportunities for joint research projects in biomedicine, nanotechnology and biophysics as well as academic mobility. The Japanese delegation was accompanied by officials of the Department of External Affairs of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

The visit follows from ongoing work Lobachevsky University has with Tohoku University, the Institute of Laser Engineering at Osaka University, RIKEN Brain Science Institute and a new partner, Saitama University.

Cooperation with the Institute of Laser Engineering, Osaka University, began in 2003.

Four years later, UNN and RIKEN Brain Science Institute signed a cooperation agreement establishing a new Laboratory for Neural Simulation Systems and Neurodynamics at UNN Department of Neurodynamics and Neurobiology. The laboratory is equipped for two-photon laser-scanning fluorescence microscopy of brain tissues.

In 2008, Lobachevsky University and Tohoku University agreed to cooperate in the fields of biology and biomedical technology as well as in physics and materials science.

On January 27, 2016, Saitama University and Lobachevsky University signed an Agreement on Academic Exchange and a Memorandum on Student Exchange.
