The Typhloinformation Center of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod conducted the second annual computer literacy competition Be an Expert in Computers among people with visual impairments on June 25. The competition was organized in partnership with Nizhny Novgorod Regional Rehabilitation Center for visually impaired people Camerata in the framework of the Charity Programme 'Status Online: Computer Literacy for the Elderly and Adults with Disabilities'.

Individuals who are blind or visually impaired cannot access visual information on the computer screen or use a mouse to navigate through content. Special software programs like screen readers or refreshable Braille displays as well as keyboards with large print key-top labels are needed. There are other barriers concerning the colour of the monitor and size of computer-generated symbols. However, despite enormous difficulties, the participants of 'Status Online' Programme learn to use software applications and are happy to take part in competitions. There is no age limit – the oldest participant is 73 years old!

The experts of the Typhloinformation Center of Lobachevsky State University of Nizhni Novgorod argue that the organization of annual competitions among people with visual impairments should become a tradition in our city as it facilitates the exchange of experience and social integration of disabled people.

UNN Typhloinformation center – the first specialized computer center in Russia for visually impaired people – was set up in 1999. It has developed training programmes for unemployed visually impaired people since 2008. There are distance learning courses through Skype for people with visual and mobility impairments.
