The year 2019 has been proclaimed by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements. This large-scale event is dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the discovery of the Periodic Law of Chemical Elements by the great Russian scientist D.I. Mendeleev. The initiative to hold the International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements was put forward by the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Russian Chemical Society, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, and some renowned Russian and foreign scientists. This initiative was supported by foreign countries, international scientific organizations, and more than 80 national academies of sciences and scientific societies, including

the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC), the International Union of Theoretical and Applied Physics (IUPAP), the European Association of Chemical and Molecular Sciences (EuCheMS), the International Astronomical Union (IAU) and others. The International Year of the Periodic Table of Chemical Elements will be held under the auspices of UNESCO in several countries of the world. As part of this event, it is planned to hold a large number of events: scientific conferences, thematic exhibitions, competitions for young scientists, etc.

Within the framework of the International Year, more than 500 popular science and educational events will be held in all regions of Russia to commemorate the 150th anniversary of D.I. Mendeleev’s outstanding discovery and to attract the attention of schoolchildren, students and young people in general to science and its achievements. From February 12 to February 14, Lobachevsky University will host an international conference entitled “Materials Science of the Future: Research, Development, Training of Researchers”. Later, in April, the XXII All-Russian Conference of Young Chemists (with international participation) will be held at Lobachevsky University.
