A recipe for youthfulness: researchers from UNN propose to do a "detox" for the brain
Lobachevsky University hosted a meeting in the "Science Breakfast" format, focusing on brain function, healthy emotions, and the prevention of age-related illnesses. The "Detox for the Brain" event brought together journalists from the Nizhny Novgorod region. The key speakers were Professor Maria Vedunova, Director of the UNN Institute of Biology and Biomedicine, and Professor Elena Mitroshina from the Neurotechnology Department at the Institute of Biology and Biomedicine.
The scientific research presented at the event was conducted as part of the Decade of Science and Technology programme (Professor Maria Vedunova) and with the support of the Russian Science Foundation (Professor Elena Mitroshina).
The discussions centered ontherole of serotonin in preventing Alzheimer's and Parkinson's diseases and on brain longevity. The scientists emphasised that true aging is primarily about declining cognitive functions, critical thinking, and social activity, rather than external age-related changes.
The speakers highlighted the differences in neurodegeneration rates between men and women and the factors that can slow down this process.
The participants of the event were also introduced to GTO-M, a cognitive simulator application developed at Lobachevsky University. It allows users to assess their cognitive age and regularly train memory, attention, reaction speed, and spatial thinking. According to the scientists, completing all the tests takes only 10–12 minutes a day, and regular practice yields a noticeable positive effect after 2–3 weeks.
The experts provided practical tips for maintaining mental clarity for years. To improve brain blood flow, specialists recommend neck and collar exercises, digital hygiene (since gadget screens overstimulate the nervous system and cause hidden stress), a balanced diet, and adequate sleep.
At the end of the event, the participants tested the cognitive simulator in practice, assessing its functionality.
