Alexander Khokhlov Memorial Badminton Tournament held at Lobachevsky University

The 20th Open A.F. Khokhlov Memorial Student Badminton Tournament was held at the UNN Faculty of Physical Education and Sports. It was organised in memory of Alexander Khokhlov, Honoured Scientist of the Russian Federation, who was the Rector of Lobachevsky University from 1988 to 2003. Following the tradition, taking part in the competition were badminton players from Nizhny Novgorod higher education institutions, and for the first time they were joined by athletes from the Republic of Mari El. Participants competed in three categories.

In men's doubles, Das Ujjal and Senthilkumar Daraneshwaran, students of Mari State University, were the winners.

In women's doubles, Anastasia Golovko from Minin State Pedagogical University of Nizhny Novgorod and Anastasia Gavyrina from Lobachevsky University claimed victory.

In mixed doubles, the home team took the whole podium.

The final game between Victor Kokhanov and Kristina Kulchitskaya against Nikita Fedotovsky and Anna Govyrina was a highlight of the tournament. Victor and Kristina, winners of the 2019 European University Championships, won this time in a hard-fought battle. At the opening ceremony, Alexander Khokhlov’s children - daughter Tatiana and son Dmitry - welcomed the young athletes. Alexander Gutko, the competition’s head referee, told the participants about Alexander Khokhlov’s outstanding personality, his work and achievements, noting that in 2003 he contributed greatly to the establishment of the Volga Region Student Sports Union.
