A delegation of the Consulate General of the Republic of Turkmenistan in Kazan visited Lobachevsky University. Oleg Trofimov, Acting Rector of Lobachevsky University, held a meeting with Guych Garayev, Consul General of the Republic of Turkmenistan in Kazan, and Ashirali Nazarov, Third Secretary of the Consulate General. The meeting was focused on joint work to attract students from Turkmenistan to the university. Also taking part in the meeting were Alexander Bedny, UNN Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Networking, Konstantin Kemaev, Deputy Vice-Rector for International Affairs and Networking, and Ekaterina Smirnova, Head of the Department for International Student Affairs.

Currently, there are more than 640 students from Turkmenistan studying at Lobachevsky University. However, the university has the capacity to increase their number to 1000. The meeting participants noted that Turkmen students are interested in history and philology, pedagogy, medicine, economics and entrepreneurship. Lobachevsky University is ready to offer a variety of training options and educational programmes for international students.

Prospects for the development of partnership projects in various areas of scientific research, cultural exchange, and the study of the Russian language were also discussed during the meeting.

"Our colleagues asked us to focus on the Russian language in the training of Turkmen students. Just this year, we have enhanced our efforts in this area. International students in all fields of specialization - some 2,200 students from about 100 countries - study Russian during their first three years of studies. We strive to make our foreign guests' educational experience as interesting and comfortable as possible. The students see this, so they willingly come to us and enrol in Nizhny Novgorod educational institutions. In close cooperation with the regional government, we have been doing and will continue to do our best to encourage this interest," said Oleg Trofimov, Acting Rector of Lobachevsky University.
