Lobachevsky University and Volga State Technical University sign an agreement on strategic cooperation

In the course of a working visit of the Rector of Lobachevsky University Evgeny Chuprunov and Vice-Rector Viktor Kazantsev to Mari El, an agreement on strategic cooperation was signed between Lobachevsky University and Volga State Technical University (VSTU). The guests from Nizhni Novgorod visited several "points of growth" of the VSTU, including biotechnology laboratories, the center of automated machine-building, the Faculty of Radio Engineering and the student design bureau. Particular attention was paid to the laboratory of mechatronic systems, whose staff work closely with the Nizhni Novgorod experts to develop exoskeletons. These devices are intended to make up for the lost functions of human body – to increase muscle strength and expand the range of motion by using the external frame and drive elements. Evgeny Chuprunov noted that cooperation in this field between the VSTU and UNN has already borne fruit: the volume of work performed by VSTU experts in this year amounted to 6.8 million roubles. This is an excellent example of networking in science and research: Nizhni Novgorod researchers have made ??considerable progress in the field of biomedical neurotechnology, while VSTU engineers have confirmed their professionalism in the design of high-precision mechanisms. This cooperation has resulted in the creation of "smart" devices for persons with disabilities. In such devices, the impulses from the patient’s brain are transmitted to the mechanical parts that mimic the movement of human joints and muscles. Constructive cooperation between the two leading universities of the Volga region will continue in the future. In the next year or two, it is planned to assemble and test a prototype of the new exoskeleton. The agreement between the two universities also provides for the development of network educational programs, organizing training and exchanges for teaching staff members, joint research and grant activities.
