International conference "Scientific Heritage of B.N. Golovin in the light of current problems of modern linguistics" was opened at Lobachevsky University on September 28. Conference participants were welcomed by Vadim Saygin, First Vice-Rector of Lobachevsky University and Ludmila Ruchina, Dean of the Faculty of Philology. The conference is held in conjunction with the celebration of the 100th anniversary of Professor Golovin’s birth. It is organized under the auspices of the Ministry of Education and Science of the Russian Federation and the Russian Humanitarian Foundation, in collaboration with the Institute of Linguistic Studies, Russian Academy of Sciences, the Vinogradov Institute of the Russian Language, Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Institute of Linguistics of the Russian Academy of Sciences. 

Professor Boris Golovin (1916 - 1984) was an outstanding Soviet linguist, Doctor of Sciences (Philology), Honored Scientist of the RSFSR. From 1961 to 1984, he was Head of the Department of Russian Language and General Linguistics at the Gorky (Nizhni Novgorod) State University. Professor Golovin was a prominent expert in general and Russian linguistics and speech culture. He was the founder of the Gorky school in linguistics and stood at the origins of the probabilistic and statistical studies of language and speech styles.
