International "Shrovetide at UNN" brings together over 400 participants from different countries
On February 21, Maslenitsa (Shrovetide) festivities were held on the main campus of Lobachevsky University, bringing together more than 400 students and university staff, as well as their family members. "Shrovetide at UNN" is a truly international event: foreign students from various countries, including those where it never snows, always become its active participants. The celebration was organised by the UNN Department of Youth Policy.
The programme of the festivities included master classes on Khokhloma matryoshka and Gorodets spoon painting, making kokoshniks (a traditional Russian headdress), and painting of 2026 mascots – horse badges. The participants were offered an interactive game programme with ethnographic songs and dances, and riding a horse-driven sleigh. Firecracker sites were set up all over the campus on Gagarin Avenue. Several hundred pancakes were baked for the festive table, and it was necessary to pass various competitions for strength, dexterity and ingenuity to deserve the traditional Shrovetide treat.
Currently, at the beginning of the 110 jubilee year of Lobachevsky University, about 28,000 students from more than 80 regions of Russia and 96 countries of the world are studying at the university.
