Lobachevsky University celebrates its 110th anniversary
On January 30, a gala event took place at the Nizhny Novgorod Academic Drama Theatre to celebrate the 110th anniversary of the establishment of the National Research Lobachevsky State University of Nizhny Novgorod.The festive evening brought together over 700 participants, including distinguished guests, representatives from UNN partners, leading industrial enterprises, government agencies, IT companies, banks, as well as university staff, students, and notable alumni from different years.
Dmitry Chernyshenko, Deputy Prime Minister of the Russian Federation,sent a congratulatory telegram to the Nizhny Novgorod State University on the occasion of its 110th anniversary: "For more than a century of its history, Lobachevsky University has become a key hub for the development of critical solutions for various sectors of the economy and has made a significant contribution to achieving the national goal of technological leadership set by our President Vladimir Putin. Achieving such high results is impossible without the personal contributions of every employee at Lobachevsky University. I would like to express my deep gratitude for your hard work, talent, and dedication."
This year also marks 70 years since the university was named after Nikolai Lobachevsky. On March 20, 1956, the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic bestowed the name of the great Russian scientist and mathematician, a native of Nizhny Novgorod, on the Gorky State University.
In his congratulatory message, Valery Falkov, Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, highlighted the university's significant contribution to the development of engineering education, successful implementation of strategic projects with a full innovation cycle, as well as the high level of professional qualifications and demand for its graduates.
"For 110 years, the university has been training highly skilled professionals for strategically important sectors of the economy and the defence industry of our country. It carefully preserves the traditions of classical university education and makes a great contribution to the development of science. You hold leading positions in our flagship programmes, Priority 2030 and Advanced Engineering Schools, and make a significant contribution to the advancement of engineering education. I wish you further fruitful work, the implementation of the most ambitious scientific ideas, and new achievements. Happy holiday, dear friends!"
The Minister’s congratulations were conveyed by Olga Petrova, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation who is also a graduate and longtime employee of Lobachevsky University.
"I am particularly proud to be an alumnus of the University's Faculty of Radiophysics. For decades, UNN has maintained a strategic partnership with the nuclear industry. Together, we are working on collaborative projects in areas such as mathematical modelling, design, production planning and management, supercomputer technologies, microelectronics, photonics, neuroelectronics, laser technologies, additive manufacturing, and quantum technologies. Our joint project, the Advanced Engineering School for Space Communications, Radar, and Navigation, brings together cutting-edge science, promising technologies, modern education, and personnel support for the nuclear industry. In the coming years, we expect to welcome around 300 university graduates to our team," noted Alexey Likhachev, General Director of the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom and an alumnus of the University of Nizhny Novgorod, in his congratulatory message to the university.
Gleb Nikitin, Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Lobachevsky University, congratulated UNN on its anniversary: "Lobachevsky University upholds the glorious traditions of the past, shaping a technologically advanced present and setting the course for the future. You are not just keeping pace with the times - you are ahead of them. The establishment of the Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence is a bold move into the cutting edge of science. The opening of the Institute of Clinical Medicine has proven to be a strategic decision, providing students with invaluable practical experience. All this positions Lobachevsky University as a leader in science, innovation, and education, a true intellectual treasure not only for the Nizhny Novgorod region but for the entire country. The programme of the festive evening included congratulations from distinguished guests and famous graduates, as well as performances by the Academic Choir of Lobachevsky University and the Nizhny Novgorod Soloists Chamber Orchestra.
"110 years ago, in the midst of the First World War, in an era of great changes, Nizhny Novgorod staked on the future by founding the People's University. It was established at the initiative of local residents and funded by Volga merchants.This undoubtedlyhas left its mark on the character and spirit of our university. Today, we stand as one of the country's foremost scientific and educational centres, actively involved in key federal programmes. We are implementing critically important applied projectsspanning the entire innovation cycle, from developing high-purity materials for microelectronics to creating software for critical infrastructure.Among our partners are the nation's largest enterprises. All this has been made possible thanks to the solid foundation laid by our distinguished predecessors. Our duty is to build upon this heritage and foster a strong and spiritually rich generation of professionals. If today's students look at us the same way we look at our teachers,then we are on the right track," emphasised Oleg Trofimov, Rector of Lobachevsky University, addressing the audience.
On the evening of January 30, the Nizhny Novgorod television tower lit up with special festive illumination to celebrate the anniversary of UNN. The official symbols of Lobachevsky University served as the central theme for the decorative lighting. The tower’s sides, coloured in dark blue, displayed dynamic logos of the university, while the media facade showcased a scrolling text with the phrases: "Lobachevsky University: the great past - the daring future", and "110 years of UNN."
