Lobachevsky University Choir wins two gold medals at World Choir Games in South Africa
World Choir Games is the most significant event in the world of choral music. The competition is held once every two years. It is staged by the Interkultur music society, which is the leading organizer of world-class music festivals and competitions. In 2018, the Games were held for the 10th time, and for the first time in the history of this contest, the World Choir Games took place on the African continent, in the South African city of Tshwane. This year, 20,000 participants from 50 countries - from the USA to China and from Jamaica to Singapore - (more than 400 choirs) took part in the competition. Russia was represented by 8 teams.
As a result of the contest, the Academic Choir of the Lobachevsky University won a gold medal in the category "University Choirs" having scored 88.38 points. It earned the second gold medal in the category "Pop Music" with the same result - 88.38 points. The final scores were given by the international jury members.
"We are honoured and proud to be named among the winners of the World Choir Games," commented on the results of the contest the art director of the UNN Choir Larisa Yerykalova. "In fact, the gold medals of World Choir Games mean the world recognition of our choir. We are happy that we can show modern Russian choral music to the whole world! And, of course, World Choir Games is a great way to demonstrate once again the strength of Lobachevsky University: in addition to teaching, inventing, and implementing research results we also sing!
Currently, the Academic Choir of Lobachevsky University takes the 93rd place in the Interkultur world ranking of choirs. This is the best result among Russian universities.
