Lobachevsky University for the first time listed in QS World University Rankings by Subject in the field of Mathematics
In 2020, Lobachevsky University was for the first time recognized in the prestigious subject ranking of the world’s best universities QS World University Rankings by Subject in the area of Mathematics, taking the position in the 401-450 band. At the same time, the UNN improved its performance in Natural Sciences, taking positions 401-450 (in 2019 it was 451-500) and retained its positions in Physics and Astronomy (301-350). According to Alexander Bedny, UNN Vice-Rector for International Affairs, the University is systematically working to improve its competitive position in the global market of science and education. "Entering the QS subject ranking in Mathematics is a natural result of the development of the University’s historically strong mathematical schools. The UNN is improving its standing among the world's leading universities in Natural Sciences. We do not intend to rest on our laurels and we are working to further increase our participation in world subject rankings, where our University holds high positions," — said Alexander Bedny.
The QS World University Rankings by Subject, compiled by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds, ranks the world's top universities in individual subject areas, covering 48 subjects. The rankings aim to help prospective students identify the world's leading schools in their chosen field in response to high demand for subject-level comparisons. Each of the subject rankings is compiled using four sources. The first two of these are QS's global surveys of academics and employers, which are used to assess institutions' international reputation in each subject. The second two indicators assess research impact based on research citations per paper and h-index in the relevant subject. These four components are combined to produce the results for each of the subject rankings, with weightings adapted for each discipline.
