In 2019,  Lobachevsky University for the first time entered the prestigious QS World University Rankings by Subject in the area of studies "Natural Sciences" where it holds a high position in the range 451-500. This year, the University has retained its high positions in the field of "Physics and Astronomy" (301-350) and has improved its rating indicators in general, being marked in 20 subject categories (compared to 17 in 2018). In addition to the above-mentioned areas,   Lobachevsky University demonstrates high results in the following fields: "Mathematics", "Biological Sciences", "Modern Languages", "Computer Science and Information Systems", "Engineering and Technology", "Materials Science", "Economics and Econometrics", etc.

According to Kirill Markov, Acting Rector of the UNN, the entry of Lobachevsky University into yet another subject category, the top 500 in Natural Sciences, reflects its new achievements in the global market of science and education. “In recent years, the university has developed a steady trend to develop unique fields of research, in particular, in the areas of biomedicine, neuroscience, human sciences, and so on. We also confidently maintain leading positions among the best universities in the world in physics and astronomy and from year to year we steadily increase the number of subject areas where the university shows very good performance,” noted Kirill Markov.

In the ranking compiled by the British company Quacquarelli Symonds, the world’s best educational institutions are determined on the basis of four criteria: academic reputation, employer reputation, research citations per paper and Hirsch index.
