The Times Higher Education Impact Rankings is the first global ranking that assesses the performance of universities on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The Sustainable Development Goals are a call for action by all countries – poor, rich and middle-income – to promote prosperity while protecting the planet. They recognize that ending poverty must go hand-in-hand with strategies that build economic growth and address a range of social needs including education, health, social protection, and job opportunities, while tackling climate change and environmental protection.

The third edition of the ranking includes an assessment of 1,591 universities from 112 countries. This year, 86 Russian universities were included in the ranking. Lobachevsky University entered the top 1,000 universities of the world in THE Impact ranking, scoring positions in all 17 SDGs.  The university was most active in achieving the goals "Preservation and rational use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development", reaching the position 201-300 and being ranked among the top 10 universities in Russia, and "Creating resilient infrastructure, promoting inclusive and sustainable industrialization and innovation", coming in between 201-300 and sharing the 8th-13th positions among Russian universities.

Rising to positions 301-400 in "Ensuring openness, safety, resilience and sustainability of cities and human settlements" resulted from Lobachevsky University's work not only in science and education, but also in the so-called "third university mission", i.e. the university's contribution to the development of society.
