Lobachevsky University, along with the Moscow and St. Petersburg State Universities, entered the prestigious Shanghai International University Ranking 2018 in the field "Atmospheric Sciences", taking a position in the range of 301-400 and becoming the only Russian regional university in this area. ShanghaiRanking's Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) 2018 was released today by ShanghaiRanking Consultancy. ShanghaiRanking began to publish Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) by academic subjects since 2009. This release contains rankings of universities in 54 subjects across Natural Sciences, Engineering, Life Sciences, Medical Sciences, and Social Sciences. In total, more than 4000 universities were ranked. Russia is represented by 17 universities, 11 of which are participants of the state-supported "5-100" project.

According to Professor Evgeny Chuprunov, Rector of the UNN, the University’s high results are largely related to its successful efforts to improve the global competitiveness of Lobachevsky University.

"The fact that the UNN is among only three universities from Russia in the Atmospheric Sciences ranking indicates our significant success in this direction. The University has implemented a large megagrant project "Interaction of the atmosphere, hydrosphere and land surface" under the leadership of a well-known world expert in this field, Professor of the Finnish Meteorological Institute Sergey Zilitinkevich and Professor of the UNN Radiophysics Faculty, Head of the Geophysical Research Department of the IAP RAS, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences Evgeny Mareyev. The number of publications of UNN scientists in highly-cited journals is growing. The University is updating its research, experimental and educational facilities; some programs are successfully functioning aimed at the development of human capital, and unique innovative projects are being implemented," said Evgeny Chuprunov.
