On December 10-13, the annual congress of the  British Ecological Society, the oldest ecological society in the world, founded in 1913, took place in the city of Belfast. The topic of the 2019 conference was "Celebrating global ecology", which emphasizes the international status of environmental science and its interdisciplinary nature. The congress was attended by more than 1200 delegates from 40 countries.

At 11 parallel sections,  reports on all branches of modern ecology concerning all biomes and habitats of the planet were presented. Vasily Yakimov, Associate Professor of the UNN Department of Ecology, presented a report on the application of multifractal analysis to describe the structure of ecological communities in the aspects of taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversity in the section "Theoretical and computational ecology (new tools and methods). "
