Victoria Turubanova, Candidate of Sciences (Biology), researcher at the Laboratory of Brain Development Genetics of the UNN Neuroscience Research Institute, emerged the champion of Science Slam Russia.

Five finalists of city slams from Nizhny Novgorod, Novosibirsk, Tyumen, Yekaterinburg and Tomsk competed for the title of the champion in the ATOM exhibition and educational complex in Moscow on 9 December 2023. The best slammer was traditionally chosen by the audience: the volume of applause and cheers was measured with the help of a special device - a noise meter. The loudest applause was given to the performance of Victoria Turubanova, a young scientist from Lobachevsky University, on the topic "How death helps to save life". She explained to the audience why cancer is still incurable and why death sometimes helps to save life.

"It took me a long time to achieve this victory, I have been preparing a lot, gaining experience, getting feedback from colleagues and also from those who are not related to science in any way. I am endlessly happy that I was supported by my friends, my colleagues in the laboratory, and the team of the UNN Science Park. My victory would not have been so exciting without them, because they shared it with me. There is a lot of amazing research at our university, and I believe that this is not our last award at popular science competitions," said Victoria Turubanova, a new champion of Science Slam Russia.

Other finalists of Science Slam Russia were: Vsevolod Efremeenko, postgraduate student of the Trofimuk Institute of Oil and Gas Geology and Geophysics (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences) and junior researcher at Novosibirsk State University; Ekaterina Kazantseva,  assistant at the Department of Mechanics of Deformable Solids of Tomsk State University and junior researcher at the Institute of Physics of Strength and Materials Science (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences); Marat Ayrapetyan, engineer at the Youth Space Centre of the Bauman Moscow State Technical University and a member of the satellite design team; Alexander Galanov, postgraduate student of the State Agrarian University of the Northern Trans-Urals and junior researcher at the Tyumen Scientific Centre  (Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

Science Slam is an international project aimed at popularising science. It is a competition between young scientists who explain their research projects in short 10-minute talks that are easy to follow and afterwards the audience gets to vote. The important thing is to explain the scientific outcome of their work in an understandable, entertaining and concise way.  Science Slam Russia has been held in the Russian Federation since 2015. The final competitions of the young scientists’ battle were held in Samara, Tyumen, Ufa, Yekaterinburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Tula and other cities.
