Lobachevsky University students complete internship at RT Arabic
From 9 to 22 February, six students of the UNN Institute of International Relations and World History undertook a practice-oriented educational internship at the RT TV Arabic editorial department in Moscow. Along with students from Nizhny Novgorod, the educational programme at the TV channel was attended by students from various universities of Moscow, Kazan and Pyatigorsk - a total of 30 participants.
The aim of the training was to increase the students' interest in improving their professional skills. The programme of the practical training session included familiarization with the activities of RT Arabic, excursions, master classes, Arabic language intensive lessons, and workshops on different types of translation.
Anna Bakoyan, a fourth-year student of the UNN Institute of International Relations and World History, majoring in International Relations, shared her impressions of the visit to Moscow:
“Every day of our internship was very busy. During the first week we familiarized ourselves with the work of RT Arabic. We were given a tour of all the studios and departments, we listened to lectures about the work of the director, producer, war correspondents, cameramen, TV presenter, prompter, those responsible for the titles and learned about how to write and design news, the specifics of simultaneous translation on television, the work of the international cooperation department, as well as how RT Arabic's social networks are run. Apart from that, we learned about working in live broadcasting and about producing. The second week of the internship was dedicated to the production of a full-scale TV programme in Arabic, where we were able to put what we had learnt into practice. In parallel, throughout the internship, the organisers gave us Arabic language classes. In the process of training we had to listen to the language while watching broadcasts and programmes, read materials in Arabic, compose small texts on our own, and, of course, communicate with colleagues in Arabic. Even in such a short time, I managed to seriously improve my language skills.“
According to Alexander Bedny, UNN Vice-Rector for International Affairs and External Communications, participation in RT projects allows international relations students to try their hand in various fields related to translation, analysing information and working with media content.
“We consider cooperation with RT, which is a market leader, as an important step in the development of practice-oriented learning at Lobachevsky University. The valuable experience gained during the internship has already helped the students to acquire new skills not only in language training, but also in learning how the dynamically developing media industry works, which makes such an internship truly interdisciplinary. We highly appreciate RT's contribution to the training of Arabic language students at Lobachevsky University and express our hope that our future cooperation will allow us to enhance professional and career opportunities for our graduates,” Alexander Bedny pointed out.
