Lobachevsky University to host international congress on history and philosophy of science

From October 2 to October 4, the 5th International Congress "The University's Mission in the Knowledge Society: Between Utilitarianism and Academic Freedom" will be held at UNN. The event is organised by Lobachevsky University, the Institute of Philosophy of the Russian Academy of Sciences, and the Russian Society for the History and Philosophy of Science.

The congress programme covers a broad spectrum of research perspectives, ranging from the history of science and technology to the philosophy of artificial intelligence and contemporary challenges in university education. The discussions will centre on issues currently affecting the university community: defining scientific knowledge in the age of artificial intelligence, evolving criteria for scientific activity, the transformative impact of digital technologies on education and scientific communication, the boundaries of academic autonomy, and how universities can balance social responsibility with the right to free scientific inquiry.

The event will feature 13 sections and 12 roundtables, attracting over 450 participants, including philosophers, historians, and sociologists of science, scholars from natural sciences and humanities, representatives of university administration, technology researchers, and young professionals. The participants will come from more than 30 cities across Russia and internationally, with speakers from Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Belarus, and Germany among others.
