Mechanics Day celebrated at UNN
On 20 April, the UNN Research Institute of Mechanics celebrated its 50th anniversary. Festivities were held at Lobachevsky University to mark the Institute’s foundation day, as well as the 65th anniversary of the founding of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. The Mechanics Day at UNN gathered more than 500 graduates, faculty members and students of the university.
Olga Petrova, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, addressed the guests of the celebration via video link:
"Dear friends, I am very pleased to congratulate you on such a significant anniversary. Lobachevsky University's Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics has graduated a huge number of young professionals. I am also a graduate of this faculty. For many of us it has become a successful start, which allowed us to achieve success and establish ourselves. My years of study at the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics are a bright period that I want to remember. I would like to say to the young people who are now studying at the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics: believe in yourself and dream big! I wish my esteemed colleagues and staff members that the Institute develops and moves forward, that Lobachevsky University becomes even more widely recognised".
Today, the Research Institute of Mechanics has seven laboratories, where research in virtually all areas of deformable solid mechanics is represented. The Institute employs more than 60 members of staff, including 28 candidates of science and 12 doctors of science.
"The Research Institute of Mechanics since its establishment in 1974 has remained a classical research institute. It worked in close connection with the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, which celebrates its 65th anniversary this year, and today it is working with the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics and other units of the university. This is one of the six research institutes of our university, which provides strength and predictive service life assessments for the operation of nuclear engineering facilities," said Oleg Trofimov, Rector of UNN.
On this day, more than 30 faculty members of the university and employees of the Research Institute of Mechanics received commendations from the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation, from the Ministry of Science and Education of the Nizhny Novgorod region, commendations and honorary diplomas from the Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region, letters of commendation from Lobachevsky University.
"Two major university units: the Faculty of Mechanics, which became part of the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics in 2015, and the Research Institute of Mechanics, provide training and scientific research in the field of fundamental and applied mathematics and mechanics. One of the strategic research and education areas of the university - engineering software development and supercomputer modelling - is implemented by these units in cooperation with the Federal Nuclear Centre in Sarov," noted Nikolai Zolotykh, Director of the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics.
