A memorial plaque to the outstanding Russian scientist, Professor Leonid Shilnikov was unveiled on November 7 on the campus of Lobachevsky University. The ceremony was attended by the UNN Rector Evgeny Chuprunov, the UNN President Roman Strongin, the Director of the UNN Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics Victor Gergel, as well as some disciples of Leonid Shilnikov, who was Head of the Department of Differential Equations at the UNN Research Institute of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics.

Professor Leonid Shilnikov was an outstanding Russian mathematician, one of the preeminent experts in the theory of dynamical systems and bifurcation theory. His scientific achievements were acknowledged by A. M.Lyapunov Award of the Russian Academy of Sciences (1998) and M.A. Lavrentiev Award of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine (2005). He was also the first President of the Nizhni Novgorod Mathematical Society.

Leonid Shilnikov was one of the founders of the theory of global bifurcations and the dynamical chaos theory. He has obtained some classical results in the mathematical theory of synchronization and the theory of strange attractors. His scientific work, as well as the work of the scientific school on dynamical systems founded by him at the Lobachevsky University of Nizhni Novgorod  is widely known throughout the world. His scientific legacy continues to have great influence on the development of the theory of multidimensional dynamical systems.
