On 12 April, the university-wide Open Day “Lobachevsky's Universe” took place at UNN.  At 9:18 in the morning, a communication session with the UmKA-1 space satellite was conducted on the university campus. UNN students received the signal and several images, including a picture of Lobachevsky University. The session of stable communication with the satellite lasted for nine minutes.

During the day, the guests of the university were offered various master classes and exhibitions; they could also visit the fair of UNN student organisations. The Open Day participants learned about the Lobachevsky satellite and were introduced to the university’s research achievements. Everyone could attend a chemical show, an archaeological exhibition, an exhibition of the UNN Military Training Centre, and observe the work of the university's Satellite Mission Control Centre. Professor Evgeny Chuprunov, Head of the Department of Crystallography and Experimental Physics, gave a lecture on the topic “Where Space Begins: Amateur Astrophotography”.

A festive meeting was held in the assembly hall for prospective students and their parents. In his welcome speech, Oleg Trofimov, Rector of UNN, noted:

“Today we did our best to give school students and parents maximum useful information about the university, and also let them feel our university’s positive energy. Being a student is a wonderful time, a time of opportunities. A time when all doors open easily and everything is within your reach. I would like to wish our applicants to be active, be inquisitive and go forward bravely. Remember that we are always there to support you. It is our mission to help you realise your creative potential.“

Then Dmitry Petelin, Hero of the Russian Federation, test cosmonaut of the Roscosmos State Corporation, welcomed everyone in a video address. Nikolay Starostin, Head of the UNN Advanced Engineering School “Space Communication, Radar and Navigation”, described in his speech the ambitious tasks that this division faces.

“Russia's advanced engineering schools and, in particular, the Advanced Engineering School of Lobachevsky University have been created to prepare the engineers of the future. The UNN Advanced Engineering School is doing its best to create conditions for training future leaders: we have equipped special training areas, industrial enterprises are involved in the educational process, projects are being developed to solve the most important problems of science and technology development in our country. It is important that young people are involved in the implementation of these projects, they learn from such projects and improve their skills”, Nikolay Starostin pointed out.

The performance of the UNN team “Error 404”, a participant of the KVN Higher League, was a real treat for the guests.

The Open Day concluded with a presentation of UNN faculties and institutes and additional consultations regarding admission. More than 1000 people took part in the event both in person and on-line.
