On the eve of the Russian Science Day, which is celebrated on February 8, the UNN press service presented some interesting facts about the university's life relating to science.

Lobachevsky University is the region's largest higher education institution, celebrating in 2026 its 110th anniversary. The university has over 28,000 students from nearly a hundred countries. Currently, UNN carries out its research and educational activities at the main university campus and facilities in Nizhny Novgorod, as well as in four branches across the Nizhny Novgorod region: in Arzamas, Balakhna, Dzerzhinsk, and Pavlovo. Today, the university comprises 13 faculties, institutes, and higher schools, along with six research institutes: the Physics and Technology Research Institute, the Research Institute of Chemistry, the Research Institute of Mechanics, the Research Institute of Radiophysics, the Research Institute of Neuroscience, and the Research Institute of Biogerontology.

During the past year, the total number of research and development projects implemented at UNN surpassed 300. The revenue from research activities and the provision of scientific and technical services at the university reached 2.2 billion roubles.

As of the end of 2025, the teaching and academic staff of the university included approximately 1,700 employees. More than 550 of them are engaged in research, with about 60% researchers being under the age of 39. Over 1,270 staff members hold the academic degree of Candidate of Sciences, while 370 have the degree of Doctor of Sciences. There are 892 associate professors and 215 professors. Among the UNN staff, there are three RAS professors, six corresponding members, and one academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

Lobachevsky University is a participant in the Priority 2030 state programme for strategic academic leadership. In 2025, the university was included in the second group of the programme and is currently implementing three strategic technology projects: Software for Critical Information Infrastructure, Neuromorphic and Quantum Technologies of Artificial and Hybrid Intelligence, and New Materials for High-tech Industries. It is worth noting that, as of late 2025, the university held a 5% share of Russia’s market for high-purity substances used in microelectronics.

Lobachevsky University is successfully continuing to implement the Advanced Engineering Schools project of the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education in the field of space communications, radar and navigation. UNN has become one of Russia’s 38 leading higher education institutions that provide training for engineering professionals and conduct scientific research to ensure the country's technological leadership. The university has a Research Centre for Artificial Intelligence, whose main task is to develop methods, algorithms and software for trusted artificial intelligence systems, including AI systems for medical applications.
