Prospects for cooperation: Lobachevsky University delegation visits China
A delegation from Lobachevsky University, led by Rector Oleg Trofimov, has arrived in the People's Republic of China. Their first stop was at Zhengzhou University, a long-standing and trusted partner of UNN. Cooperation between the two institutions began in 2021 and has since been developing successfully, opening up opportunities for academic exchange and joint initiatives.
As part of the joint programme, Zhengzhou University students come to UNN every year to study Russian. In the autumn semester of the 2025/26 academic year, Lobachevsky University hosted nine students from Zhengzhou University, which underlines the sustainability and importance of cooperation between the two institutions. Students have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the language environment and get acquainted with the culture and educational traditions of Russia.
In the course of the visit, Rector Oleg Trofimov and Vice-Rector of Zhengzhou University Zang Shuangquan held constructive talks, discussing potential new avenues for cooperation. Particular attention was given to the development of three key areas: chemistry and new materials, microelectronics and information technology. These areas were chosen because they are relevant and promising fields in which both universities can collaborate on joint projects and research.
Vice-Rector Zang Shuangquan noted that UNN has established itself as a reliable partner promoting knowledge exchange and cultural interaction. He expressed his hope for further successful cooperation between the two universities, emphasising the significance of academic ties in the development of science and education in both countries. This collaboration between UNN and Zhengzhou University not only enhances the quality of education for students but also provides a platform for scientific research and innovation.
The UNN delegation also explored the infrastructure and educational resources of Zhengzhou University, gaining a deeper understanding of potential opportunities for future joint programmes. Oleg Trofimov emphasised the value of such visits in fostering mutual understanding and the exchange of expertise between educational institutions in the two countries.
The UNN delegation also visited the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Relations of Zhengzhou University. During the meeting at the Institute, the development of a joint programme for learning the Russian language was discussed. UNN Rector expressed his belief that joint efforts would substantially enhance students' educational level and enrich their understanding of Russian culture and language.
One of the key events was a meeting with first-year students of the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Relations who had chosen Russian as their foreign language. During the conversation, UNN representatives answered the students' questions about the internship programme offered at Lobachevsky University. The students showed active interest in the opportunities provided by this programme, and asked questions about the specifics of living and studying in Russia. Currently, the Russian Department of the Institute of Foreign Languages and International Relations at Zhengzhou University has approximately 80 Chinese students, which indicates a growing interest in the Russian language in China.
Gang Xiaolin, director of the Institute, noted that the number of students choosing to study Russian is increasing every year. She pointed out that Russian is among the priority areas for study in China, confirming its importance and relevance on the international stage. According to her, the growing interest in the Russian language among Chinese students stems from the expanding economic and cultural ties between Russia and China. Gang Xiaolin expressed hope for continued cooperation between UNN and Zhengzhou University, as this will contribute to a deeper understanding and exchange of experiences between the young people of both countries.
