“Quantum Week in Nizhny Novgorod” started on November 11 and will take place for five days at different venues of the city. The event includes open educational lectures, educational events for school children, such as excursions to research laboratories, a professional development programme for Nizhny Novgorod physics teachers, as well as the 2nd All-Russian Quantum Hackathon for students, postgraduates and young scientists specializing in quantum technologies.

The organizers of “Quantum Week in Nizhny Novgorod” are Rosatom - Quantum Technologies, Nizhny Novgorod Research and Education Centre, and Lobachevsky University. The key partner of the project is the Russian Quantum Centre.

The opening ceremony of the “Quantum Week in Nizhny Novgorod” at Lobachevsky University gathered over 200 guests - school and university students, young scientists, representatives of specialised research and educational organisations.

“Quantum technologies have long remained in the realm of fundamental research, but today modern science is beginning to discover their applied potential. These technologies may be in demand in the oil industry, banking sector and wherever there is a need to work with big data and optimise calculations. Therefore, quantum technologies are one of the main directions in the work of the Nizhny Novgorod Research and Education Centre”,  said Andrey Sanosyan, Deputy Governor of the Nizhny Novgorod region.

Oleg Trofimov, Rector of Lobachevsky University, addressed the participants with his welcoming remarks. He said:

“Quantum technologies are at the heart of scientific breakthroughs of tomorrow. For our university and for the whole Nizhny Novgorod region this direction is one of the priorities. We were among the first to become a participant of the inter-university quantum network deployed by Russian Railways. We carry out research and development work, introduce new educational programmes, involve school students in quantum science. We closely cooperate on this way with Rosatom State Corporation. The fact that Nizhny Novgorod became the venue for the Quantum Week emphasises the region's leadership in the field of quantum technologies”.

The central event of the “Quantum Week in Nizhny Novgorod” will be the 2nd All-Russian Quantum Hackathon, “Quant-NN“, which will open on November 13 at the campus of Lobachevsky University.

“20 years ago, quantum technologies seemed to be a total fantasy, but already 10 years ago the first prototypes of working quantum computers were demonstrated. Whoever is the first to develop a powerful quantum computer will, in a certain sense, rule the world. We have an educational programme “Quantum and Neuromorphic Technologies” at the Faculty of Physics of Lobachevsky University. There are also research projects in this area. For example, a project to develop new components for superconducting neural quantum networks. Quantum computers already outpace classical computers in solving serious problems, so the quantum future is not far off,” said Alexander Malyshev, Dean of the UNN Faculty of Physics.

“Quantum Weeks” launched by Rosatom - Quantum Technologies is an ecosystem project to enhance involvement in the current agenda of quantum technologies for schoolchildren, students, teachers, university professors and researchers, representatives of regional authorities, business and development institutions. The project is implemented in the constituent entities of the Russian Federation and is aimed at large-scale popularisation of natural science disciplines and knowledge in the field of quantum technologies, raising awareness of the achievements of modern Russian science, formation of ideas about the ways of professional fulfillment of young people, including quantum industry, and formation of professional communities.
