The campaign to recruit volunteers for FIFA Confederations Cup 2017 and FIFA World Cup 2018 in Russia was one of the most ambitious in the history of the volunteer movement and broke the record for the World Championships in terms of the number of applications submitted by candidates. From June 1 to December 30, 2016, the closing date of the recruitment campaign, about 177 000 persons submitted their applications to become volunteers of the "Russia 2018" Organizing Committee. The previous record set during the World Football Championships in Brazil  (152 101 persons applying for the positions of volunteers) was surpassed by nearly 25 000 applications. The volunteer program of the 2018 World Cup has aroused great interest abroad:   almost a third of the candidates (27%) submitted their applications from almost 190 countries. Nizhni Novgorod was chosen by 5413 candidates as a city where they would like to help the organizers of the World Cup.

According to Elena Chumankina, Director of the FIFA 2018 Volunteer World Cup Center in Nizhni Novgorod, these figures are quite impressive:

“This is a good indicator that a large number of residents of the city and the region want to contribute to the organization of the most ambitious sports event in Russia in modern times.”

The Cener for the preparation of city volunteers for the FIFA 2018  World Cup events in Nizhni Novgorod will continue to accept applications from candidates until October.
