Research round table at UNN Faculty of Law
The UNN Faculty of Law hosted a research round table discussion on the topic "International Economic Sanctions and Countermeasures: Focus on the Russian Federation".
The event was organised by the staff of the Department of European and International Law and the Centre for European and Eurasian Legal Studies (CEELS) of the UNN Faculty of Law and the Department of World Economy and Customs of the UNN Institute of Economics and Entrepreneurship. The round table was held in a hybrid format and was moderated by Yulia Orlova, Head of the Department of European and International Law.
The session was opened by Evgenia Chernykh, Dean of the Faculty of Law, who noted the importance of inter-faculty academic cooperation, especially in those areas that require synergy and an interdisciplinary perspective. The keynote speakers of the round table were Daria El Mukahal, Senior Lecturer at the Department of European and International Law, and Maria Gorbunova, Head of the Department of World Economy and Customs.
Daria El Mukahal presented a report on the development of Russian and international trade law under the impact of international sanctions. Her presentation focused on the types and nature of sanctions against the Russian Federation, the classification of states according to their position on the anti-Russian sanctions, the special economic measures taken by the Russian Federation in response to international sanctions and the situation with "circumvention" of sanctions.
Maria Gorbunova gave a presentation on the development of international cooperation as a specific reaction of the Russian Federation to international sanctions. She emphasised that in the context of sanctions, the Russian Federation has reached a new level of interaction with the states of the Global South, not only in the Greater Eurasia area, but also in Africa and Latin America. Maria Gorbunova noted that today the trans-regional integration contour of the EAEU, which implies the conclusion of new agreements on the establishment of free trade zones, is gaining additional momentum. Meanwhile, in the monetary and financial sphere, a new paradigm of cooperation is taking shape as a result of sanctions against Russian banking institutions in the field of international settlements and the freezing of the Bank of Russia's external assets in Western currencies.
Among the participants of the discussion were faculty members and researchers of the Department of World Economy and Customs and of the Department of European and International Law, as well as students and postgraduates of the UNN Faculty of Law.
The participants of the round table expressed their willingness for further cooperation and joint interdisciplinary research.
