Ephemeroid flowers began to bloom in March in the Botanical Garden of the UNN Institute of Biology and Biomedicine.

Snowdrops were the first to appear in the arboretum at the beginning of March. Elwes's snowdrop (Galanthus elwesii), is a native of Southeastern Europe and Asia Minor. It is named in honor of Henry John Elwes, a British botanist who identified the plant on a visit to Turkey in 1874. Galanthus is called “snowdrop” because of its white buds that appear above the snow.

Last week, the crocuses also started to flower. The spring crocus or saffron (Crocus) is native to the mountains of Europe (Pyrenees and Alps). Its numerous varieties and hybrids with other species are widely used in floriculture.

Ephemeroids are a group of perennial herbaceous plants that flower for a very limited period of time, usually in early spring. After flowering, the leaves dry up and the plants take a rest until the next spring. At the same time, according to the researchers of the UNN Botanical Garden, there are early-flowering species of long vegetation, including even wintergreen species that retain their leaves under the snow. One of such plants is the noble liverwort, which will soon bloom in the Botanical Garden of Lobachevsky University.
