Symposium on ancient and medieval studies held at Lobachevsky University
A research and practice symposium titled "Ancient and Medieval Studies: Unity of Research and Educational Practices" took place at Lobachevsky University, bringing together more than 60 participants.
Researchers from Moscow, St. Petersburg, Nizhny Novgorod, Yaroslavl, Saratov, and Tula took part in the symposium organised by the UNN Institute of International Relations and World History.
The event focused on discussing problems and innovative methodological approaches in ancient and medieval studies, the interaction of research and educational practices, the exchange of scientific knowledge, and teaching experience in the fields of ancient and medieval history, ancient languages, and source studies. The symposium was held to mark the 110th anniversary of Lobachevsky University, the 110th anniversary of historical education at UNN, and the 50th anniversary of the Department of History of the Ancient World and the Middle Ages.
Professor Alexander Makhlayuk, Head of the Department, and Vladimir Blonin, Associate Professor at the Faculty of Social Sciences (who previously also headed the Department of History of the Ancient World and the Middle Ages), demonstrated in their presentations the significant role of this university unit in educational and research work.
Professor Andrey Kuznetsov from the Department of Culture and Psychology of Entrepreneurship at the UNN Institute of Economics delivered a report dedicated to Sergey Arkhangelsky, Corresponding Member of the USSR Academy of Sciences and the first Dean of the Faculty of History and Philology, established at Gorky University in 1946. The report was co-authored with Olga Selivanova, Deputy Director of the Archive of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
Over the course of two days, symposium participants discussed the current state of ancient and medieval studies in contemporary contexts, examining specific historical themes in classical archaeology, ancient and medieval history, as well as the reception of antiquity and the Middle Ages.
The research and practice symposium "Ancient and Medieval Studies: Unity of Research and Educational Practices"was held in memory of professors Evgeny Molev (1946–2021), Sergey Sizov (1954–2025), and Vladimir Strogetsky (1940–2025), who at different times headed the Department of History of the Ancient World and the Middle Ages.
