On September 15,  the qualification stage of the Championship of the South of Russia and the Volga region 2019-2020 was held at the Alekseev Technical University of Nizhny Novgorod. It is a qualifying contest for the quarter-finals of the World Programming Championship among student teams. Universities of Nizhny Novgorod were represented by teams of three educational institutions: Lobachevsky University, Alekseev Technical University of Nizhny Novgorod and Higher School of Economics (Nizhny Novgorod).

A convincing victory in qualifications was won by Lobachevsky University students. The first place was taken by the team comprising Nikolai Kalinin (UNN Advanced School of General and Applied Physics), Alexei Danilyuk and Valeria Ryabchikova (UNN IITMM). A UNN IITMM team consisting of Maxim Emelin, Alexander Krapivin and Alexander Lebedev holds the  second place. Both teams solved 11 problems out of 12, but the team of Nikolai Kalinin made it faster.

According to the results of qualification, each university has the right to send to the quarter-finals two teams that have passed the selection, and all of their teams that are in the TOP-40 of the respective region. In addition to the two teams of Lobachevsky University named above, the region’s TOP-40 also includes two more IITMM teams: Aleksey Petukhov, Ilya Khlyustov and Aleksey Krasilnikov, as well as Arseny Obolensky, Vladislav Devlikamov and Sergey Konnov. Yet another IITMM team may pass to the quarter-finals as a result of the quota, so Lobachevsky University can retain the five-team representation that it had at last year’s quarter-finals in Saratov.
