UNN Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics celebrates its tenth anniversary
On December 1, the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics of Lobachevsky University celebrated its tenth anniversary. This date also marks the birthday of the outstanding Russian mathematician Nikolai Lobachevsky, and in 2024, Russia established a professional holiday, Mathematician's Day, in his honour. Next year, Lobachevsky University will celebrate its own 110th anniversary.
Evgenia Chernykh, UNN Vice-Rector for Academic Affairs, congratulated the Institute on its anniversary, noting its many achievements.
"Today is a truly unique situation: for the third year in a row, we celebrate anniversaries. The year before last, we celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, last year – the 65th anniversary of the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, and this year – the 10th anniversary of the IITMM. It’s not easy to forge your own history when your roots lie in outstanding university units with brilliant minds and remarkable achievements. However, the team led by Nikolai Zolotykh has done an excellent job. IITMM is an actively developing division, with its staff implementing major federal projects. The Institute trains top-level IT professionals and makes significant contributions in the field of artificial intelligence. It actively participates in the Priority 2030 programme and is one of UNN’s research flagships. I wish you continued success and continued progress!"
The anniversary celebration was attended by representatives of the Institute's partner companies: Yadro, Sberbank PJSC, T1 IT Holding, Sigur, Globus, and some others.
Nikolai Zolotykh, Director of the Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics, and Mechanics, welcomed the guests: "Today we are marking our 10th anniversary. We are not just young—we are practically still in our infancy. Nevertheless, we have a strong foundation. IITMM was established in 2015 through the merger of esteemed faculties, the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics and the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics. We cherish, uphold, and follow their traditions. On one hand, we see ourselves as the heirs to their legacy, and on the other, we clearly see our path forward and understand where we need to go. We are focused on the future. I would like to congratulate everyone on these special occasions—Computer Scientist's Day and IITMM's birthday."
The Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics, and Mechanics (IITMM) was established in 2015 by reorganizing key units of Lobachevsky University: the Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics, the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics, and the Research Institute of Applied Mathematics and Cybernetics. The Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics came into existence following the division of the Faculty of Physics and Mathematics on March 25, 1959. Almost all of this faculty’s mathematical departments trace their roots back to the Department of Higher Mathematics, which was founded simultaneously with the establishment of the Nizhny Novgorod State University in 1918 and was headed by Professor Ivan Braitsev. The Faculty of Computational Mathematics and Cybernetics was created in 1963 based on the Department of Computational Mathematics and Machine Dynamics within the Faculty of Mechanics and Mathematics. Professor Yuri Neimark was the driving force behind the faculty's establishment and organisation.
