An international Olympiad co-organised by Lobachevsky University concluded in Novi Sad, Serbia. Every year students from Serbia, Montenegro, Republika Srpska, Bulgaria and Macedonia take part in the competition. One of the subjects in the Olympiad programme is Russian as a foreign language.

Lobachevsky University has been taking part in the Olympiad as a co-organiser since 2017.  As in previous years, the university lecturers compiled Russian language assignments and conducted testing. About fifteen hundred school students took part in the distance round, and about eighty participated in the in-person round.
Participants had to take a grammar test, a listening test and an interview. Irina Abramova, Head of the Lobachevsky University Serbian Centre and Deputy Director of the UNN Institute of Philology and Journalism,  served as an examiner for the oral test.

"At this Olympiad, I see results that are fantastic. The way the foreign students answer in Russian at the interview, the way they think - these are amazing things! Also this Olympiad is an indicator of how eager they are to learn Russian, how much they yearn for Russia with all their soul! It's an overwhelming and absolute desire," noted Irina Abramova.

The International Olympiad in Novi Sad is organised by an initiative of NIS company (Naftna Industrija Srbije, PJSC Gazprom) as part of the Energy of Knowledge project, in partnership with the Zmaj Gymnasium and Lobachevsky University.

Three years ago, after a long break, Russian became the second foreign language to be studied at schools in Serbia as an option, and every year the number of those wishing to learn Russian continues to grow.
