The Universiade 2024, a comprehensive student competition among universities of Nizhny Novgorod and the Nizhny Novgorod region, culminated in the victory of the Lobachevsky University team.
Sports competitions were organised in two stages: mass competitions among the faculties at the university level were followed by competitions among the university teams of Nizhny Novgorod.
The programme of the Universiade 2024 included competitions in 31 sports. A total of 1,580 athletes from 10 universities of the city and the Nizhny Novgorod region took part. The team of Lobachevsky University scored 403 points and took the first place. The second place went to the team of Alekseev Technical University. The team of Minin Pedagogical University took the third place.
On 18 June, Lobachevsky University hosted a ceremony to honour the winners and medalists. The ceremony was attended by representatives of universities participating in the Universiade 2024. They were welcomed by Roman Strongin, President of Lobachevsky University, Alexander Gutko, Head of the Department of Theory and Methodology of Sports Training at the UNN Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, and Elena Orlova, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports.
"Today, many people understand the importance of sports and physical education. And when we talk about the health of the nation, it is sport that we have in mind. It plays an important role not only in terms of health improvement. People who gather for competitions undergo appropriate socialisation in society. They learn about winning and losing. This is a very important and accessible form of socialisation at a young age. Being a member of a sports team is also a very good way to build resilience and character. We appreciate the work of coaches who unite teams and help them move forward. Sport is kept alive by those who believe in it. I congratulate all the participants and winners of the competition," said Roman Strongin.
Representatives of the universities that won prizes at the regional Universiade 2024 received their trophies. Elena Orlova, Dean of the Faculty of Physical Education and Sports, accepted the award on behalf of the Lobachevsky University team.
