Roman Vyunov, a master’s student of the UNN Institute of Information Technology, Mathematics and Mechanics (IITMM), has led the team of Lobachevsky University to the first place in the competition "OCR. Artificial Intelligence" of the International Olympiad "IT-Planet 2020/21".

The finals of the prestigious IT competition took place from 12 to 15 November online in 21 categories. Nizhny Novgorod region was represented in the finals of the International Olympiad by 17 participants, students of Nizhny Novgorod colleges and universities. In total more than 400 students and young graduates from 160 educational institutions in Russia and CIS countries, who demonstrated the best results in the online qualifying stages, were invited to participate in the final stage of the Olympiad.

The winners of the competition in the category "OCR. Artificial Intelligence" were announced on 15 November.

On the way to the finals, the UNN team had to make its way through two qualifying stages: during the first stage, participants were offered the task of recognizing various text document elements (the text itself, tables, pictures, signatures and seals). At this stage, Egor Goryachkin, a graduate of the  UNN IITMM master’s programme, also participated in the team. In the second stage of the selection process, the team had to develop a programme for digitising water meter readings. The final task was to develop a tool to search for similar products based on a given image. This was the task Roman Vyunov did better than all his competitors.

After the competition, the winners will be offered an opportunity to get an internship in leading Russian and international companies or get a job, exchange experience, and be included in the database of promising and talented IT/AI specialists.
