The first of five international research workshops "Media Systems of Russia and Indonesia: Moving Towards Each Other" started at Lobachevsky University. Attending the workshop were students of the UNN Institute of Philology and Journalism, university staff members and representatives of the Jakarta Veteran National Development University (Indonesia). The cycle of workshops is scheduled to run until the end of 2024.

Participants and guests were welcomed by Konstantin Kemaev, UNN Deputy Vice-Rector, and Ludmila Makarova, Deputy Director of the Institute of Philology and Journalism, Associate Professor of the Journalism Department.

The workshop is conducted in the form of an academic dialogue. Dr. Radita Gora Tayibnapis of the Social Sciences Department at the Veteran National Development University presented a report on "Big Data Digital Journalism and Spatial Geodata". Ludmila Makarova from Lobachevsky University gave a presentation on  "Fact-checking Technologies for Modern Media".

"We have chosen the most relevant issues. The topic I am talking about has been of interest to our colleagues from the very beginning of our cooperation. For the Veteran National Development University, this is a key issue. We see that the Southeast Asian region is developing dynamically, including in the field of scientific research and the development of information technologies. By the way, Indonesia ranks third in terms of Internet use, and Russia is fifth. But the country has experienced some problems. The development of technology has led to deep fakes in journalism, in politics, in everyday life. That is why they are very interested in fact-checking technologies," said Ludmila Makarova.

The topics of the presentations, which are of practical importance, were of great interest to both sides.

"Solving problems related to the environment is one of the areas of Lobachevsky University's activities. We participate in various environmental projects, we also have an accredited Master's programme "Global Environmental Problems in the Context of Modern Media". In particular, the topic of the Indonesian colleague's report will help us to update the relevant data on this educational programme. Moreover, the very methodology of using technologies, statistics, working with databases is also useful in theoretical terms," Ludmila Makarova added.
