In December, 2016, researchers of the UNN Institute of IT, Mathematics and Mechanics and the UNN Research Institute for Supercomputer Technologies together with their colleagues of the Moscow State University Research Computing Center organized a workshop on supercomputing co-design technologies (SCDT-2016) in Granada, Spain. The workshop was held within the framework of the 16th International Conference on Algorithms and Architectures for Parallel Computing (ICA3PP 2016). A guest report was presented by Professor Thomas Sterling, an outstanding expert in the field of supercomputer technologies. The workshop was attended by scientists from Russia, USA, France, and Poland. The key organizers of the workshop were V.P. Gergel (Director of the UNN Institute of IT, Mathematics and Mechanics, V.V. Voevodin (Deputy Director of the MSU Research Computing Center), and I.B. Meyerov (Associate Professor of the UNN Institute of IT, Mathematics and Mechanics).

The discussion at the workshop covered a wide range of topics related to supercomputer co-design technologies. In particular, several papers were focused on the methods and tools for analyzing and optimizing the performance, scalability, and efficiency of programs, which is essential for pragmatic use of the resources of existing and future supercomputers. Some aspects of the use of supercomputers for solving problems in computational physics and biomedicine were also discussed. Co-design technologies have been applied by some authors for high-performance computing in astrophysics, plasma physics and heart modeling on traditional and heterogeneous supercomputers. A number of papers concerned parallel data processing with the use of finite state automata, as well as the use of specialized systems for supercomputing education.
