Young Archaeologist School for Nizhny Novgorod high school students
50 high school students from Nizhny Novgorod took part in the Young Archaeologist School that was organised on 28 and 29 March by representatives of the UNN Institute of International Relations and World History. School participants were introduced to the techniques of pottery making in the Antiquity, based on examples of artefacts from excavations in Eastern Crimea. They also modelled vessels (pots and bowls) using the technique of spiral knotwork moulding.
The master class held by Natalia Kuzina, Associate Professor of Ancient and Medieval History Department included theoretical and practical sessions covering the main aspects of pottery making as well as hands-on experience in designing moulded vessels used in ancient times by the population of the Bosporan state.
The students were then introduced to stone and bone working techniques from the Stone Age. This master class was conducted by Dmitry Talovin, head of the department of ancient and traditional cultures at the Lobachevsky University Museum. He also showed the students an experiment on "primitive" fire making.
Fyodor Drozdov, Associate Professor of Modern and Contemporary History Department, told the students about "war archaeology". His presentation focused on field expeditions of the Kurgan search organisation of Nizhny Novgorod to the battlefields of the Great Patriotic War.
