International conference "Journalism in the system of alternative information sources" was held at Lobachevsky University on March 14-15, 2017.  The aim of the conference was to  discuss topical issues of journalism training. At the opening of the event, Sergey Kuchin, Minister of Information Technologies, Communications and Mass Media of the Nizhni Novgorod region, addressed the participants with a welcome speech where he emphasized the speed and extent of transformation of the information space and noted that the distinctions between journalism, mass media and communications as such are disappearing.

Vice-Rector for Public Relations of Lobachevsky University Nikita Avralev had this to say in his opening address: "Many people believe that journalism is a craft, but not a science. However, I am sure that the experience of Lobachevsky University, in particular, of its Faculty of Philology and Journalism Department, shows that there are certain scholarly topics directly related to the practice of journalism, and we have a lot of things to discuss, analyze and forecast".

The topics discussed at the conference included: communicative mission of journalism in the modern media sphere; professional and non-professional journalism in dialogue with society; printed press: state of the art, education, research; transformation of journalistic practices on the radio; television: reality variants; Internet technologies in the information and communication process: new realities; what sort of journalism education is required in the digital age?

Conference participants presented their reports covering these and some other topics relevant to the role of journalism in today’s world. Professor of the Faculty of Media and Journalism at Volda University College (Norway) Svein Brurås, made a presentation "Creating news content: the experience of Scandinavia". In the framework of the conference, Tatiana Frolova, Professor of the Periodical Press Department at the Moscow State University, visited the Media Center of Lobachevsky University, where she met with first-year students of the UNN Journalism Department. She told the students about the peculiarities of teaching social journalism at the Moscow State University and answered their questions.
